A 19-year-old man in Missouri is accused of killing another man on Easter Sunday, allegedly fatally shooting the 22-year-old victim in the chest during a botched robbery. Fernando Z. Hutchinson — who authorities say was wearing an “active shooter” sweatshirt at the time of the incident — was taken into custody on Sunday and charged with one count of first-degree murder and one count of armed criminal action in slaying of David C. Davis.
According to a probable cause affidavit from the Osage Beach Police Department, officers at about 8:32 p.m. on Sunday, March 31, responded to a parking lot of Jetz Trampoline Park in the 1000 block of Passover Road in regards to an individual being shot.
Upon arriving at the location, first responders say they found an individual — later identified as Davis — suffering from what appeared to be a gunshot wound to the chest and began providing medical assistance. The victim was able to tell police that he did not know the identity of the person who shot him, per the affidavit.
In an interview with police, a man who was with Davis just prior to the shooting said that the two of them were “hanging out” in the parking lot inside of a car when an individual — later identified as Hutchinson — allegedly “came up to the vehicle, reached in, grabbed something, and ran away.”
The man said that he and Davis were chasing the man back toward a nearby apartment complex when they split up. He told police that he heard what sounded like several gunshots and a short while later, he saw Davis walk up to him and say, “He shot me.”
Surveillance footage from the area showed that after Hutchinson allegedly swiped something from Davis’ car and ran, three other individuals ran back to the same apartment complex and into unit 12. The shots then ring out and the individual who appears to be Hutchinson also heads for unit 12. Hutchinson allegedly fell while entering the apartment and a “distinct sound of a metallic object scraping against the cement can be heard on the tape, police wrote.
A short time after entering unit 12, Hutchinson allegedly left and went directly to unit 16, where he resides.
The three other individuals who were allegedly seen running into unit 12 ahead of Hutchinson were all placed under arrest after security footage allegedly showed them and Hutchinson “talking about stealing” from the victim. All three gave nearly identical stories to police in regards to the shooting, according to the affidavit.
The three said that they were smoking with Hutchinson who said he was going to go out and “get some weed.” Hutchinson then borrowed a handgun from one of the other three, with the individual who lent it to him saying he was “not thinking Hutchinson was going to do anything with it,” the affidavit states.
A short while later, the three individuals said they saw Hutchinson running away with at least one person chasing him, so they ran back to unit 12. The trio said they heard at least one gunshot and then saw Hutchinson “burst into the apartment,” falling down and dropping the gun onto the floor.
One of the individuals said they remembered Hutchinson saying that the victim “got too close to me.” The resident of the apartment said he then kicked Hutchinson out.
Police located Hutchinson in unit 15 that evening. He was said to be wearing dark pants and a hoodie that said “Active Shooter” on it.
Hutchinson in March 2023 was charged with burglary and stealing a motor vehicle. That case remains open.
Hutchinson is currently being held in the Camden County Sheriff’s Office without bond.
