Man sold 14-year-old relative to another man for $12,000- A 38-year-old man from Castroville, California, named Obdulio Aparicio, was sentenced to five years in state prison for selling a 14-year-old family member to another man for $12,000, with the intention that the teen would be used for sex. Monterey County Superior Court Judge Andrew Liu handed down the sentence on March 28, 2024, after Aparicio pleaded guilty to two felonies and a misdemeanor.

The charges included one count of human trafficking of a minor for commercial sex purposes, a felony offense, one count of child abuse, and one count of misdemeanor domestic violence. This was Aparicio’s first convictions of any kind. In addition to his prison sentence, Aparicio will be required to register as a sexual offender for the rest of his life.

The case was initiated when officials at North Monterey County School District contacted deputies on April 28, 2023, reporting possible child sexual abuse at a home in Castroville. Detectives from the Investigations Division took over the investigation into the alleged sexual abuse of a minor while the Patrol Division investigated allegations of corporal injury to a spouse.

The investigation led to the discovery that Aparicio had negotiated the sale of the teen, referred to as “Jane Doe,” to Javier Saavedra for $12,000. Saavedra was later convicted of statutory rape of a child and oral copulation of a person under 18 years of age, receiving a sentence of nine months in prison, three years of felony probation, and was ordered to attend a program for sex offenders.

The Monterey County District Attorney’s Office and the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office expressed shock and disbelief at the actions of Aparicio, describing the sale of a human being for money as “tragic” and “despicable.” The case highlights the severity of human trafficking and the devastating impact it has on its victims, emphasizing the need for vigilance and action against such heinous crimes.
