A man is accused of running over a woman at an Indiana gas station and, after running away, asking officers “how many did I kill?” once he was caught.

Edwin Sosa Gonzalez, 22, faces charges including failure to remain at the scene of an accident, causing death when operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated, and operating a motor vehicle without ever receiving a license, according to Marion County Superior Court records reviewed by Law&Crime.

Tamara Thomas, 33, was identified as the victim in the crash, per area NBC affiliate WTHR.

On Sept. 26, Sosa Gonzalez was driving a Honda CR-V in the area of 16th Street and Tibbs Avenue in Indianapolis. He had borrowed the SUV from a friend, local Fox affiliate WXIN reported.

The defendant was allegedly drunk and crashed into a car. As he tried to drive away, the damaged SUV wouldn”t turn as he wanted it to, causing him to jump a curb and run over Thomas, who was walking through a BP gas station parking lot and trying to get out of the way, according to court records.

Sosa Gonzalez came to a stop when he crashed again, this time into a wooden fence, authorities said. He then ran from the vehicle, according to police.

The suspect allegedly called the person who owned the vehicle and told him to report it stolen. When police caught up to the defendant, he registered a 0.229 blood-alcohol level on a breathalyzer, officers said.

And as Sosa Gonzalez was being arrested, he reportedly asked in Spanish, “How many did I kill?”

The defendant was not supposed to be in the U.S., federal immigration authorities say.

In July 2021, he entered the U.S. through Texas, according to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The defendant came from Honduras, and though he was arrested by U.S. Border Patrol, DHS said he was released back into the country.

In February 2024, Sosa Gonzalez reportedly crashed into three parked vehicles and was transferred to DHS custody. However, the agency says he was released on bond. And though he was scheduled to be removed from the country in June, authorities could not find him.

“He went MIA. Now he’s out drinking and driving and now he’s killed my daughter,” Tommy Thomas, the victim’s father, told WXIN. “I’m so angry right now. … I just want justice. He should not have been here.”

The defendant made his first appearance in court this week for the recent case. DHS has asked local officials not to release him, and he is scheduled to go to trial in December.
