The girl’s uncle called police shortly after 8 a.m., telling them he’d just awakened and found that his mother had stabbed his niece, WABC reported. Police arrived and found the girl in her bed, covered in blood. They rushed her to Lincoln Hospital, where she underwent surgery is said to be stabilized.

Doctors told investigators she had lacerations on her back and torso, the latter of which perforated a lung. An ultrasound revealed internatal bleeding near the heart and a possible punctured kidney. The doctors said she lost a third of her blood volume and was given a transfusion.
The uncle and the grandmother, identified as Mariza Yauger, were both taken to the hospital with the girl. Her parents, who live in New Jersey, met the rest at the hospital.
Investigators interviewed the parents at the hospital while their daughter was in surgery but spoke to the younger sister at the apartment.
Yauger was later arrested and charged with attempted murder, attempted manslaughter, criminal possession of a weapon, assault, reckless endangerment, and endangering the welfare of a child.
Detectives said she has a history of mental health issues, but the city’s Administration for Children’s Services said it has no history with the family.
