TRACYS LANDING, Md. (TCD) — A 26-year-old man will spend the rest of his life behind bars for killing his mother, a cybersecurity executive, in 2021.
A judge sentenced Andrew Beavers on Thursday, Jan. 11, to life in prison for the first-degree murder of his mother, Juanita Koilpillai, the Anne Arundel County State’s Attorney’s Office announced. A jury convicted him of the charge, as well as a weapons offense, following a weeklong trial in August 2023.
According to an initial press release from the Anne Arundel County Police Department, on Sunday, July 25, 2021, shortly before 3:30 p.m., officers responded to the 6300 block of Genoa Road in reference to a missing person. At the scene, Koilpillai’s boyfriend told police he hadn’t seen his girlfriend, and he noticed blood inside the home.
The state’s attorney’s office said officers followed the trail of blood from the master bedroom to a marshy area on the property, where they discovered Koilpillai’s body covered in grass and other debris. An autopsy showed the victim died of multiple stab wounds, and officials ruled her death a homicide.
According to the state’s attorney’s office, Koilpillai sustained 65 defense injuries and 38 cutting and stab wounds in total.
A witness reportedly told investigators the victim’s son, Andrew Beavers, had previously assaulted his mother, and he would often drive her car, which was missing from the property. Police found the vehicle in Leesburg, Virginia, the next day.
During the investigation, police noticed a fresh laceration on Beavers’ right hand, and he refused to explain the injury. Officials also found his DNA on the weapon used in his mother’s slaying.
Police concluded Beavers killed his mother, hid her body on the property, and then fled to Leesburg, Virginia, where he was arrested on July 31, 2021.
In addition to the life sentence, Beavers was given three years for the weapons offense, which will be served concurrently.
State’s Attorney Anne Colt Leitess said in a statement, “His mother provided him with a place to live, a vehicle to drive, and only wanted the best for her son. This sentence holds him accountable for his actions and provides justice for Juanita’s family and loved ones.”
