Mich. man accused of setting home on fire with roommates inside found not guilty by reason of insanity

JACKSON, Mich. (TCN) — A 43-year-old man accused of setting his house on fire with his roommates inside has been found not guilty by reason of insanity.

On Jan. 21, the Jackson Fire Department arrived at a two-story home that was engulfed in flames, MLive reports. A 62-year-old man who lived in the home escaped through a second-story window and a 67-year-old resident was rescued by first responders. Both men received medical treatment at hospitals.

The roommate of the victims, Frederick Noakes, was reportedly on the ground outside the home, according to MLive.

Chris Simpson of the Jackson Police Department told Wilcox Newspapers, “This subject ultimately admitted to officers that he set the home on fire in an attempt to harm his roommates, as he believed they were conspiring against him.”

Noakes was arraigned on charges of first-degree arson and two counts of assault with intent to do great bodily harm on Jan. 23, according to Wilcox Newspapers. His bond was set at $500,000 cash.

Noakes was found not guilty by reason of insanity on Sept. 16, MLive reports. He had been charged with two counts of assault with intent to do great bodily harm and one count of first-degree arson. Doctors at a state-run facility found Noakes not criminally responsible and he was committed for treatment.
