MADISON HEIGHTS, Mich. (TCN) — A couple has been sentenced to life in prison for felony murder and first-degree child abuse in connection with the death of a 6-year-old boy in 2024.
On July 30, 2024, Elaina Rose Jennings, now 27, called 911 to report that her son was unconscious. Responding officers transported Giovanni “Chulo” Jennings to a hospital, where he died July 31.
An autopsy found Giovanni Jennings died of blunt force abdominal trauma and a perforated bowel. He had bruises and cuts all over his body and a BB gun injury on his groin.
According to Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald, Jennings initially lied to police and said her son had been uninjured before going to see his biological father. No evidence was found that the child’s father was involved.
Investigators learned the boy was kept in a pen in the bedroom shared by his mother and her boyfriend, Daniel John Giacchina, now 34. He was beaten and endured other punishments, such as being stapled to the wall because he was looking out the window. The couple reportedly photographed the incident. Interviews with other children in the home and evidence including a BB gun and staple marks on the wall corroborated the medical findings.
According to McDonald, evidence was found on a cell phone in which “Jennings and Giacchina laughed about the photo and Giacchina’s use of the staple gun to solve quote ‘the problem,’” Law & Crime reported at the time.
Elaina Rose Jennings and Giacchina were arrested and charged in connection with the child’s death.
In March, Elaina Jennings was convicted of felony murder, first-degree child abuse, and lying to a peace officer in connection with her son’s death, ClickOnDetroit reports. On June 9, a jury found Giacchina guilty of all charges against him, including felony murder and first-degree child abuse.
On Sept. 9, each was sentenced to life in prison without parole, according to ClickOnDetroit.
An online tribute to Giovanni Jennings says, “He had a big smile and always gave the best hugs. He is missed dearly by his father Esteban Cabrera, his grandmother Gudelia Angeles, his brother Emmanuel, and sister Alayah.”
