MONTEREY COUNTY, Calif. (TCN) — A 14-year-old girl reported missing in September along with her father following the alleged homicide of their newborn baby has been found safe in Mexico and her father has been arrested.
The investigation into Diana Galvez Ortega and her father, 38-year-old Sergio Galvez Perez, began on Aug. 1 when a deceased baby girl with signs of traumatic injury was found on the side of a road in Monterey County, California, according to the sheriff’s office.
Evidence showed that Ortega had given birth along the roadside and put the baby, nicknamed Baby Angelita, on the ground before leaving. The infant’s death was classified as a homicide, and the sheriff’s office developed probable cause to arrest Galvez Perez charges of incest, lewd and lascivious acts with a child under 14, lewd acts with a minor, unlawful sexual intercourse, child concealment, and child endangerment.
An Amber Alert was issued by the sheriff’s office on Sept. 6 after Flock camera footage allegedly showed the father and daughter traveling together in a car without plates.
According to the sheriff’s office, the car was found Sept. 8 and authorities alleged Galvez Perez was hiding Galvez Ortega to avoid being arrested.
On Oct. 5, the sheriff’s office announced that Mexican law enforcement rescued Galvez Ortega in Mexico and Galvez Perez was arrested. Sheriff Tina Nieto said, “Monterey County Sheriff’s Office detectives have worked closely with the FBI and Mexican authorities to secure Diana’s safe rescue. During the rescue operation, Sergio Galvez Perez was arrested after he was found in possession of narcotics. Mexican authorities are aware of the pending charges against him in Monterey County for crimes committed against Diana. Diana is safe and is currently in the care of local authorities in Mexico.”
The Merced Sun-Star reports no charges have been filed against Galvez Ortega.
The investigation is ongoing.
