Missing University of Missouri student Riley Strain found dead in Nashville river

The body of Riley Strain, a University of Missouri student who had been missing since March 8, 2024, was found on the morning of March 22, 2024, in the Cumberland River in West Nashville, approximately eight miles from downtown. Strain, aged 22, was last seen on Gay Street at 9:52 p.m. after drinking downtown. His stepfather, Chris Whiteid, reported that Strain had been overserved and was attempting to settle his tab at that time.

Strain’s body was discovered by a work crew shortly before 7:30 a.m. on 61st Avenue North in the Nations area. Metro Nashville police and Nashville firefighters responded to the scene.

The body was still clothed in the same shirt and wearing the same watch he had on when he disappeared, aiding in his identification. Police Chief John Drake confirmed that there were no signs of foul play, and no evidence suggested anything other than Strain accidentally falling into the river.

The recovery of Strain’s body brought a measure of closure to the search team, who had been anticipating finding him within 14 to 20 days after his disappearance. The body was located approximately 8 miles from downtown, where Strain was last seen. An autopsy was pending, and Strain’s family had been notified.

Strain’s bank card was discovered on an embankment between Gay Street and the Cumberland River. Surveillance footage capturing an encounter Strain had with a police officer on the night of his disappearance was also released, raising additional concerns and providing context to the investigation.
