Genea Samantha King was taken into custody and charged with one count of felony child neglect and three counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor, court records show.
She is also facing two counts of assault and battery on a law enforcement officer and one count of obstruction of justice for her alleged actions during the arrest.
Officers with the Prince William County Police Department responded to a home in the 15700 block of Cranberry Court in Dumfries, Virginia, on Aug. 28 regarding a report of possible child neglect, Washington, D.C., CBS affiliate WUSA reported.
Upon arriving, police located the children inside the home, which they described in a probable cause affidavit as “deplorable.”
Evidence reportedly showed that King left her residence around 7 p.m. Aug. 28 to “attend an event.” Her 1-year-old child and two juvenile nephews remained at the home without an adult, according to a report from the Daily Voice.
Authorities did not release the ages of King’s two juvenile nephews.
Police remained at King’s home until the following morning, when she returned from the event.
When officers attempted to place her under arrest, King reportedly attempted to flee the scene on foot. Authorities said she then assaulted the arresting officers “multiple times” before officers finally restrained her. One officer suffered minor injuries in the encounter, WUSA reported.
King was processed at the Prince William County Jail. She appeared for her arraignment on Monday and was released on her own recognizance.
King is scheduled to appear in the county’s general district court for a preliminary hearing on Oct. 20, records show.
