Nevada police investigating the shooting in Las Vegas where Gabriel Rivera allegedly killed his mom’s abusive boyfriend (KTNV).
A Nevada man allegedly shot and killed his mother‘s abusive boyfriend after confronting him about giving her a black eye, according to police.
Gabriel Rivera, 23, gunned down his mother’s boyfriend and left his body inside a makeshift shed in the backyard of a Las Vegas residence where the couple was living, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department reports.
An arrest report obtained by the Las Vegas Review-Journal says officers responded to the residence around 4:25 a.m. after receiving 911 calls about the shooting.
The victim, Edward McClellan, 39, was inside the shed with a witness when Rivera showed up to confront him over a domestic violence incident between McClellan and Rivera’s mom, according to the arrest report. Police said another witness heard Rivera yelling at McClellan about giving his mom a black eye and the woman being covered in bruises.
“Where is my mom?!” Rivera allegedly yelled and banged on the shed door, according to the witness inside the shed with McClellan.

Gunshots rang out, with Rivera allegedly shooting McClellan and then running toward the front yard, where he jumped into a white four-door vehicle and drove away. Ten handgun cartridges were found around McClellan’s body, according to the arrest report.
“At some point during the confrontation, Gabriel shot and killed (McClellan) before he fled the residence in his vehicle,” police said in the arrest report, according to the Review-Journal.
Several people who knew Rivera’s mom and McClellan confirmed to police that their relationship was volatile and “turbulent, with frequent fights,” the arrest report says. The day after McClellan was killed, Rivera’s mother contacted police and allegedly told investigators that McClellan had given her a black eye.
The woman allegedly described their five-month relationship as being rocky and said McClellan had previously accused her of sleeping with other people.
According to the arrest report, Rivera’s mother said things started to escalate when she came home late from work.
“Call me as soon as possible,” McClellan allegedly texted Rivera’s mom. “Or don’t call ever,” he said, followed by a broken heart and middle finger emoji.
Police used license plate readers and cellphone-location data to locate Rivera and place him at the crime scene around the time McClellan was shot, according to the arrest report.
The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department arrested Rivera on Monday in Menifee. He faces felony charges of open murder and battery with the use of a deadly weapon resulting in substantial bodily harm, court records show.
Rivera’s next court date is scheduled for Sept. 15.
