MONMOUTH COUNTY, N.J. (TCN) — A 33-year-old man has been sentenced to life in prison in connection with the 2022 murder of his ex-girlfriend.
NJ.com reports that according to the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office, Jordan J. Vilcatoma-Correjo was convicted of first-degree murder and second-degree disturbing human remains earlier this year. He was sentenced to life in prison on Oct. 20.
The body of Sonia Gonzales, 26, was found on June 10, 2022. She was inside a car underneath garbage bags and was reportedly missing an eye and had suffered blunt-force trauma, according to NJ.com. Her ex-boyfriend, Vilcatoma-Correjo, was taken into custody at the scene. He was reportedly missing a finger, according to New Jersey 101.5; the missing finger as well as Gonzales’ eye were found in the back of the car.
According to prosecutors, the couple had broken up shortly before Gonzales was killed. NJ.com reports that Gonzales had reportedly moved out of the home she had shared with Vilcatoma-Correjo, changed her phone number, and changed her daily routine so she would not have to see him.
At trial, Vilcatoma-Correjo’s defense argued that the killing was a crime of passion, but prosecutors showed evidence that in the days leading up to Gonzalez’ death, Vilcatoma-Correjo became aggressive, obsessive, and threatening.
