ALAMOGORDO, N.M. (TCD) — Police arrested a 33-year-old man this week on suspicion of killing his co-worker during a planned fight at a park.
On Sept. 25, shortly after 2:30 p.m., the Alamogordo Police Department and Otero County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 900 block of Fairgrounds Road in Hang Gliders Park to a report of a shooting. At the scene, officers found a 42-year-old man, identified by KRQE-TV as Joe Romo, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
The victim was transported to Gerald Champion Regional Medical Center, where he died from his injuries.
Police allege Logan Jacobs agreed to meet the victim at Hang Glider Park to fight, then he allegedly shot the victim several times. Jacobs and Romo both reportedly worked for the city of Alamogordo Parks and Recreation Department and met up at the park after work.
Prior to the shooting, Romo reported a fight between him and Jacobs to their supervisor that occurred earlier in the day in the parking lot, KRQE reports. In surveillance video, Romo was reportedly heard saying, “Where are we doing this? Let’s go.” The two allegedly left and were seen driving toward the park.
According to KRQE, Jacobs admitted to shooting Romo and said he initially met with him to “settle their dispute.” Romo allegedly hit Jacobs in the throat during the fight, and Jacobs pulled out a 9 mm handgun and shot him.
Witnesses reportedly saw Romo hit Jacobs, but KRQE reports court documents refute that.
Police arrested Jacobs on Wednesday, Dec. 6, on a warrant for first-degree murder. He was booked into the Otero County Detention Center.
According to KRQE, Jacobs has a criminal past of threatening multiple people with guns.
