NEW YORK (TCN) — A 47-year-old woman has been arrested and charged in connection with the 2022 death of a woman following an unlicensed cosmetic procedure, police say.
On Feb. 15, 2022, 53-year-old Maxine Messam was allegedly driven to a hospital in her own car and dumped outside without pants, CBS News reports. She was unresponsive, and the two women who brought her in claimed they had found her in that condition at a cemetery.
Messam had injection marks on her buttocks and was pronounced dead, according to CBS News. Detectives then began an investigation into whether Messam had undergone a botched cosmetic procedure, News 12 Connecticut reports.
According to prosecutors, a silicone substance had been injected into her buttocks to augment the area by someone who did not have a license to practice, WPIX reports.
On Oct. 16, Alicia Leslie, also known as Alicia Toya, was identified as a suspect. She was arrested in connection with Messam’s death and charged with criminally negligent homicide and unauthorized practice of a profession, according to CBS.
Messam’s friends told News 12 Connecticut she “lit the room with her presence.” According to the outlet, she was a wife, mother, and hardworking state employee.
Per CBS News, Leslie is scheduled to appear in court again on Nov. 4.
