“Because water reacts and scientists have proven that molecules in the water react to our emotions to what is being said.” There was something of an uproar on social media in response, while retired pro Mary Carillo called for Djokovic to retract the claims, telling Tennis Channel: “I’m very disturbed that Djokovic and that other guy are saying you can change toxic water to drinking water. This is dangerous stuff.”

Adria Tour fiasco

Another one involving the Covid pandemic, Djokovic staged the Adria Tour exhibition series in Serbia and Croatia when the strict lockdowns were lifted in June 2020. The Croatia final was cancelled at short notice when participating player Grigor Dimitrov tested positive for Covid. There had already been doubts about the exhibiton events because they contained full crowds and no social distancing.

And concerns were heightened when footage emerged of the hugging and going out dancing during the two events. Three other participating players – Borna Coric, Viktor Troicki and Djokovic – later tested positive, as well as Troicki and Djokovic’s wives and Djokovic’s coach Goran Ivanisevic. Colleagues like Nick Kyrgios came out to slam the event, tweeting: “Boneheaded decision to go ahead with the ‘exhibition. Speedy recovery fellas, but that’s what happens when you disregard all protocols. This IS NOT A JOKE.”
