Denys Monastyrskyy was Ukraine’s Interior Minister who served as the first secretary who ran a ministry and managed Police and security inside Ukraine.

The 42-year-old Ukraine Interior Minister, Denys, got killed in a helicopter crash on the outskirts of Kyiv en route to the front lines.

The Minister was in charge of the Ukrainian Police and other emergency services following the highest-profile Ukrainian casualty since Russia launched its invasion nearly a year ago.

Ukraine’s Interior Minister Denys became lifeless on January 18, 2023, when the helicopter he was traveling in crashed near a children’s nursery on the outskirts of Kyiv.

Officials claimed the aircraft was flying towards front-line positions in Ukraine’s east when it came down, but no immediate official statement on the cause of the incident.

The State Emergency Service of Ukraine (SESU) confirmed in its latest update the death toll at 3 pm local time (13:00 GMT) stood at 14, including one child. As of now, the death toll at 18.

Denys, the interior Minister, was born in the city of Khmelnytskyi, in western Ukraine, on June 12, 1980, when the city and Ukraine more widely formed part of the Soviet Union.

Following his death, Bury told Al Jazeera, Denys’s demise made Ukrainians lose to the top of the ministry by decapitation.

Before his political journey, the Minister began a career as a lawyer and graduated from the Khmelnytsky Institute of Regional Management and Law in 2002.

In addition to Minister, deputy Yevhen Yenin and Interior Ministry State Secretary Yurii Lubkovych also lost their lives in a helicopter crash near a nursery in Brovary, outside Kyiv.

Ukraine’s emergency services revealed that at least 14 people died overall, including those on board and a child on the ground while the accident occurred.

Denys took up a role as an assistant consultant to a Ukrainian member of parliament in 2003. Later, in 2016, he was admitted to the Ukrainian Institute of the Future, an independent think tank.

After graduation, he worked as an expert with the think-tank for three years, researching reform issues related to the country’s legal system.

The Minister, in 2019, joined the Campaign team for then-presidential candidate Volodymyr Zelenskyy. After Zelenskyy was elected president, he became a member of Ukraine’s parliament.

As soon as he joined parliament, he served as chair of the parliamentary committee on law enforcement.

Explore Helicopter Crash Update

Denys was appointed Ukraine’s interior Minister six months before Russia launched its invasion in July 2021.

As interior Minister, Denys was in charge of the Ukrainian Police and emergency services to update the Ukrainian public on casualties caused by Russian attacks.

According to the RBK-Ukraine news agency, deputy Ukrainian presidential officer Kyrylo Tymoshenko was briefed about the helicopter going to one of the epicentre of the war with Russia, but viewers will access detailed information later.

As per sources, Ukraine’s prosecutor general, Andriy Kostin, said on Telegram that the Security Service of Ukraine is carrying out the investigation.

Videos of the crash shared on social media showed a burning building, screaming, and bodies draped in foil blankets lying in a courtyard is vivid.
