DETROIT (TCN) — A 31-year-old woman has been charged with concealing the death of an individual after the body of her newborn son was found in a dumpster.
ClickOnDetroit reports that on July 8, police found the newborn wrapped in a blanket inside a tote in a dumpster. WXYZ reports the body was severely decomposed. The child’s mother was identified as Daysiana Powell following an investigation. She allegedly never contacted the authorities regarding the child’s death.
Members of Powell’s family were reportedly devastated by Powell’s alleged actions and told WXYZ they would have helped her had she asked.
Powell was arrested July 10 and arraigned two days later. She was released on $50,000 personal bond, according to ClickOnDetroit. She is scheduled to appear in court on July 21 and 28 for her probable cause conference and preliminary hearing, per WXYZ. If convicted as charged, she faces up to five years in prison.
