A 61-year-old mother traveled across the country to California to see her adult son, who ended up “bludgeoning” her to death with a hammer inside his Laguna Beach home, prosecutors say.
Safford Wolfson, 36, is facing a felony count of murder and a felony enhancement of personally using a deadly weapon — the hammer — in connection with the death of his mother, Angela Caprioli, last week in Orange County.
On Monday, local prosecutors announced in a press release that Wolfson had been formally charged and was being held in lieu of $1 million bail.
Laguna Beach police officers were called to Wolfson’s home in the 1300 block of Dunning Drive on the morning of July 20 after his grandmother arrived there to find broken furniture and “blood everywhere,” according to the press release.
The grandmother found Wolfson “covered in blood” on the floor of the residence with self-inflicted injuries to his neck, the Orange County DA’s Office says.
Caprioli, who was visiting from Maine, was discovered in a bedroom with severe blunt force injuries to her head and face. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police have not released a motive.
“It is heartbreaking to think that someone could so violently end the life of the very person who gave them life,” said Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer in a statement Monday. “We will continue to pursue justice for Ms. Caprioli and everyone who loved her.”
If convicted, Wolfson will face a maximum sentence of 26 years to life on all charges. Neighbors told local CBS affiliate KCBS he had been living at his Laguna Beach residence for about six months and his mother traveled from Maine to drop off a television and some other items.
“He was pretty mysterious,” said resident Dustin Petit. “He wasn’t talking to us, you know, he would come outside, smoke a cigarette and play some guitar. That’s kinda the extent of the relationship we’ve had with him over the last six months or so.”
A LinkedIn account for Wolfson says, “I am currently the business manager and administrative assistant for Kevin’s House LLC, a dual diagnosis sober living and assisted adult care facility which I co-founded with my mother in September of 2021.”
Caprioli described herself as the owner on Facebook.
“We offer medication assistance and transport for those who are struggling with social interaction and the key mental health difficulties in todays chaotic world,” Wolfson’s LinkedIn bio says. “We offer a large range of options including a peer support specialist, who visits the estate three times a week and specializes in peer support and trauma therapy.”
Wolfson is scheduled to be arraigned on Oct. 1.
