BROWNSVILLE, Texas (TCN) — A 46-year-old man who stabbed and beheaded three young children has been found competent to be executed on Nov. 12.
According to MyRGV, John Allen Rubio and his then-partner, 46-year-old Angela Camacho, beheaded 3-year-old Julissa Quesada, 14-month-old John Rubio, and 2-month-old Mary Jane Rubio. John Allen Rubio was the father of the youngest child; the two oldest were Camacho’s.
KRGV reports that investigators believe that the couple killed the children because they could not financially support them; since 2003, John Allen Rubio has claimed the children were possessed by demons.
In May, KRGV reported that John Allen Rubio stated the oldest child told him she was his grandmother. He said, “She was telling me that she was my grandmother, so she was acting weird. … She was screaming in a weird voice, and she was not herself. And that’s when I called Angela.” He then stated that he killed the family’s pet hamsters and then told Camacho he believed Quesada was possessed.
KRGV reports John Allen Rubio stated his 2-month-old daughter was decapitated in the bathroom and Camacho held Quesada down while he fatally stabbed her. He then claimed he and Camacho had sex before killing the 14-month-old boy.
Rubio was convicted in 2003, but his sentence was overturned in 2007. At his retrial in 2010, he was convicted and sentenced to death, per MyRGV. Camacho is currently serving three life sentences for her role in the children’s deaths.
Valley Central reports that John Allen Rubio’s defense team filed a motion in April asking for additional evaluations to determine whether Rubio has the capacity to understand that he is facing execution. He was evaluated by two experts, and on Oct. 7, District Judge Noe Gonzalez reviewed the findings and determined that he is competent to be executed on Nov. 12.
An aunt of two of the victims was present during the hearing, and Valley Central reports that of the execution date, she shouted, “You’re going to meet your father the devil that day.”
