Katie Thyne Death: Vernon Green II Found Guilty Of Officer Murder

In the case of a man accused of killing Katie Thyne, a Newport News police officer, a jury returned a guilty judgment.

The 12 jurors determined that Vernon Green had committed second-degree murder in killing Katie Thyne, a Newport News Police officer.

He was found guilty of fleeing the scene of an accident as well. Green appeared in court on the first day of the trial unrestrained and dressed professionally. For both charges, he filed a not-guilty plea.

According to authorities, she was killed after being carried for a block by Green’s car during a traffic stop before it slammed into a tree. Later, she passed away at a hospital.

After two hours of deliberation, the jury ultimately returned a guilty judgment. According to the Commonwealth’s Attorney, Green had a laser-like focus on the pistol in the vehicle and purposefully put the car in drive when Officer Thyne was in the door.

Green’s lawyer claimed that although Green intended to leave, he never did so to kill or hurt anyone.

The verdict was pleasant to hear, according to Officer Thyne’s aunt. Green will be sentenced on February 17.

On Thursday, Green testified that he hadn’t intended to kill her. With a prior felony record, he claimed he knew he shouldn’t be carrying a gun and was trying to flee.

In Nashua, Tim Thyne resides. He claimed his immediate family would attend Green’s sentence in February even if they couldn’t attend the trial.

He claimed that although they appreciate the jury’s judgment today, they still don’t feel that the matter is resolved.

Tim Thyne stated, “We’re hopeful that justice will finally be done by February, and he’ll get the maximum punishment.

Tim remembers his sister as upbeat and claims that her memory lives on in her daughter, who is now four years old.

Tim expressed his family’s gratitude for all the support they have received in recent years.

After graduating from high school, Katie joined the U.S. Navy and served five years before joining the Navy Reserves in 2018.

She received the Good Conduct Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal.

She met her ex-wife Whitlee while serving in the Navy, and the two of them went on to have a lovely daughter named Raegan Grace.
