An Arkansas woman will spend roughly two decades behind bars for repeatedly shooting her ex-boyfriend after she got tired of helping him “battle his spiritual demons.”

On Tuesday, Aug. 18, Rebecca Jane Mryglod, 38, pleaded guilty to one count of domestic battery in the first degree.

In quick fashion, the defendant was sentenced to 240 months — or 20 years — in state prison. Mryglod was credited with a substantial 648 days spent in pretrial detention, Cleburne County court records show.

The underlying incident occurred in November 2024 at a residence on Altom Road in Drasco — a small, census-designated place located roughly 80 miles north of Little Rock.

Officers arrived in response to a shooting and found the victim being loaded into an ambulance “covered in blood” and “screaming in pain,” according to an arrest warrant affidavit obtained by Law&Crime.

At the scene, the defendant had blood on her clothes and hands, police said. Approximately 100 yards from the house, investigators found a Kel-Tec .22-caliber pistol “with the slide locked back and an empty magazine inside,” authorities said.

Outside the residence, Mryglod, also bloody, was crying and breathing rapidly, according to a Cleburne County Sheriff’s Office incident report obtained by People magazine.

The woman asked a detective on the scene whether the man was going to die.

The detective replied that the man was screaming and that was a good sign.

At the sheriff’s office, the defendant was read her Miranda rights and agreed to a custodial interview, authorities said.

“Mryglod stated she and Kevin had split up, but she had moved back in to help him battle his spiritual demons,” the charging document reads. “Mryglod stated she had purchased the .22 pistol three days prior and had been target practicing with it.”

The detective then asked the woman what made her shoot the man.

“Mryglod stated she would rather Kevin be dead and her in prison where she didn’t have to help him battle his spiritual side any longer,” the affidavit continues.

The defendant also described the shooting in detail.

Mryglod said she woke up around 5 a.m. on the day in question and went to her vehicle to grab the gun and ammunition, according to the charging document. After that, the defendant told the detective she went back in the house and “continued with her morning routine and put her daughter on the school bus.”

When the defendant came back in after sending her daughter off to school, the victim was “sitting on the couch,” Mryglod said. So, she asked him if he was going in to work that day.

“Mryglod stated Kevin began to stand up stating what did you and [redacted] do to me,” the affidavit goes on. “Mryglod stated while he was standing up, she turned her head pointing the gun at Kevin and began firing.”

The defendant was initially charged with attempted murder in the first degree, first-degree domestic battery and simultaneous possession of drugs and firearms, but several charges were dropped as part of the plea agreement.
