A Colorado man has been convicted of murder after killing his girlfriend and trying to disguise the shooting as a fatal break-in.
Lisa West, 34, texted her pal, “I wish I could leave, but I literally have nowhere to go and no money,” the same day her boyfriend, Kevin Wells, shot her in the head at the Mountain Shadows Apartments on Fontmore Road in Colorado Springs, according to court testimony reported by The Gazette.
Wells, who was 36 at the time of the slaying, was convicted Friday of murder by an El Paso County jury, local CBS affiliate KKTV reports. Online court records show that Wells went on trial last week.

Testimony from Wells’ preliminary hearing last year laid out how he called 911 and reported someone trying to break into his apartment. Wells told a dispatcher he was not there but that West was inside.
When officers arrived, they found West dead with a single gunshot wound between her eyes. She and Wells allegedly had a history of domestic violence and prosecutors described West as wanting to leave Wells because he was abusive.
Wells called 911 around 11:35 a.m. the morning West was found dead, according to KKTV. His father reportedly contacted police about 30 minutes later and told them that Wells confessed to killing West.
Court documents obtained by local Fox affiliate KXRM said Wells told his father that he “screwed up” and that “my life is over,” the outlet reports. Wells’ boss also called 911 and told police that Wells confessed to killing West in a text.
When police later spoke with Wells’ parents, his father told officers that Wells said his girlfriend “hit” him and threatened to bring “guys” over. Wells claimed that he ordered West to leave and said he shot her when she refused.
Wells is scheduled to be sentenced Nov. 20.
