A 64-year-old woman in South Carolina will likely spend the rest of her life in prison for the 2024 killing of a pregnant teenager and her unborn baby, stabbing the victims to death during an “ongoing beef” with the mother-to-be and leaving the bodies in a ditch behind her home.
Barnwell County Circuit Judge Walton J. McLeod on Thursday ordered Jacqueline Y. Reid to serve 50 years in a state correctional facility for the slaying of 17-year-old Maylashia Hogg, court records show. McLeod handed down the sentence after Reid pleaded guilty to one count of murder and one count of causing the death of an unborn child in utero during the commission of a violent crime.

As Law&Crime previously reported, Hogg was 40 weeks pregnant when she disappeared on Feb. 8, 2024, just days before she was scheduled to give birth on Feb. 14.
Authorities obtained surveillance footage that showed Hogg leaving her boyfriend’s home and walking past a park on the way to her own house. But prosecutors said the teen never arrived home.
Hogg’s family grew increasingly concerned with each passing day as they were unable to reach the teen, who missed a scheduled doctor’s appointment and failed to show up at the hospital to be induced on Valentine’s Day.
A break in the case came when investigators were able to track Hogg’s AirPods to Reid’s home. A search of the area behind the house led police to a ditch where they found the bodies of Hogg and her unborn child.
Prosecutors previously said Hogg had been stabbed 50 times, with wounds to her head, neck, back and stomach, Court TV reported. The unborn child also suffered a series of fatal stab wounds.
The investigation also pointed to Reid’s home. Forensic testing found DNA matching Hogg in three locations inside the house, despite Reid telling investigators that Hogg had never been inside.
When investigators first went to Reid’s home, they also noticed several rugs drying on the porch that smelled of bleach, prosecutors said.
Reid had gone to a hospital on Feb. 8 after nearly severing the pinkie finger on her right hand. During a later jail call with her boyfriend, she said she had cut the finger while preparing chicken. Her boyfriend questioned how she could have injured a finger on her right hand while holding a knife in her left.
Reid also told her boyfriend that she no longer wanted to stay alone in her home. At one point, she mentioned buzzards in the area and suggested that “something must be dead out there,” prosecutors said.
Despite the evidence gathered by investigators, prosecutors acknowledged during Reid’s 2026 bond hearing that they had never established a motive for the killing.
“We have no idea why,” Solicitor Leigh Staggs said. “But we know that this poor 17-year-old girl and her baby ended up in a ditch right behind the defendant’s home for several weeks before she was located.”
Hogg had lost her mother and was living with her grandfather and uncle when she was killed, according to Court TV. The defendant was known to spend time at the house, and had an “ongoing beef” with Hogg, Staggs said.
Hogg’s family had previously confronted Reid in court. Her stepfather, Michael Sapp, broke down while recalling how he repeatedly asked Reid whether she had seen Hogg during the search for the missing teenager.
“I just can’t believe that she actually did this,” Sapp said.
