A New York woman has been criminally charged after her 15-month-old son was found dead on Monday.
Officers who responded to a Queens home discovered Charlie Ramraykha unresponsive and his mother, Nicole Boodhai, 28, with lacerations to her wrists. While Boodhai was hospitalized in stable condition, her son was pronounced dead, according to KABC.
“The first scream was a man, for sure, and it was a very loud, aggressive scream, and the second one I heard sounded like a child, a child screaming in fear,” a neighbor told the news outlet.
Officials believe Boodhai’s injuries were self-inflicted. Meanwhile, sources told the New York Post that before police arrived, Boodhai called the boy’s father and revealed what she had done. The sources also claimed that Boodhai and the baby’s father apparently did not live together.
According to Gothamist, authorities said there was no trauma to Ramraykha’s body, and he was not discovered in water. They also claimed that Boodhai used a boxcutter to cut her wrists.
Ramraykha was found unresponsive in the bathroom. Pills were discovered in the bathroom — and detectives believe the toddler had ingested them, The New York Times reported. The type of pills was not disclosed.
The medical examiner is conducting additional testing to confirm Ramraykha’s cause and manner of death.
Boodhai is charged with murder and child endangerment. It is unclear when she will be arraigned.
