An Oklahoma man faces first-degree murder charges after sheriffs say he stabbed his grandmother to death and then attacked his wheelchair-bound father with a knife, stabbing him more than 20 times.
Nicholas Scarborough, 30, is charged with murder in the death of his 79-year-old grandmother Dorothy Newton. His father is in critical condition, according to a statement from the Wagoner County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement posted to Facebook on Thursday. Local CBS affiliate KOTV identified the suspect’s father as Daniel Scarborough.
Police said Dorothy Newton first called police while her grandson stabbed her to death before allegedly turning his sights on his father.
Neither emergency services nor police were able to get to the home in Redbird, Oklahoma in time to save the elderly woman.
“These were good people. They tried and tried to raise Nicholas Scarborough to be a good person and he was just never going to be that,” Wagoner County Sheriff Chris Elliot told KOTV.
In body camera video of the takedown of suspect Scarborough — police said they met him as he was leaving the scene of the crime — officers can be seen and heard loudly commanding him to get on the ground. In the video footage, Scarborough puts his hands in the air for a moment before the situation devolves completely.
Scarborough, grunting gutturally, charges towards the officers and within a fraught few seconds, he is wrestled down in the brush with police lights glaring around him as he moans and writhes.
Officers can also be seen using a stun gun to finally subdue him.
Scarborough, 30, is charged with murder in the first degree, attempted murder, assault and battery on a police officer and resisting arrest.
According to the sheriff’s office, he is a member of a federally recognized Native American tribe, which will prompt the FBI to take the lead while the Wagoner County Sheriff’s Office assists. A booking photo was not immediately available through the sheriff’s office and a spokesperson for the department did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
