CHARLOTTE, N.C. (TCN) —Â A 22-year-old man is accused of shooting a fellow Popeyes employee because of a disagreement about overcooked biscuits.
According to WJZY-TV, on Sunday, May 11, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department officers received a call about an assault with a deadly weapon at a Popeyes on South Boulevard. Responding officers located a victim with gunshot wounds, and medics took him to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.
WBTV-TV, which cites court records, reports a customer saw the suspect, Rodney Wood, and the victim get into a fight inside the fast-food restaurant due to “burnt biscuits.” The two men reportedly took the altercation outside, where it turned physical. Wood allegedly had a gun on him and shot the victim “twice at point-blank range.” One shot hit the man in the groin and the second shot in the chest.
Wood allegedly fled the scene following the incident, but police located him nearby. Wood reportedly told police that the victim punched him in the face several times, so he fired “warning shots.”
Both Wood and the victim are managers at the Popeyes, and they’ve reportedly had issues in the past. WBTV reports Wood previously asked to transfer locations because he did not want to work with the victim.
Wood was booked into the Mecklenburg County Jail on one count of attempted first-degree murder.
