MONTEREY COUNTY, Calif. (TCN) — Arrest warrants and an Amber Alert have been issued for a 14-year-old girl accused of killing her newborn baby and the teen’s father, believed to also be the father of the deceased infant.
According to the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office, the investigation began on Aug. 1 after authorities responded to a report of a baby found alongside the road. The infant, nicknamed Baby Angelita, was pronounced dead. Investigators learned that Baby Angelita allegedly showed signs of traumatic injury. Evidence allegedly showed that a juvenile girl had given birth to her alongside the road and placed the infant on the ground before leaving.
KRON reports the infant’s death was classified as a homicide.
The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office used Flock automated license plate reader technology to track down leads and identify a vehicle allegedly associated with the case. They developed probable cause to issue arrest warrants for 36-year-old Ofelia Garcia Ortega on child endangerment charges and 38-year-old Sergio Galvez Perez on charges of incest, lewd and lascivious acts with a child under 14, lewd acts with a minor, unlawful sexual intercourse, child concealment, and child endangerment.
Garcia Ortega posted bail and was released from custody, according to the sheriff’s office.
On Sept. 6, the sheriff’s office announced that an Amber Alert was issued for Galvez Perez’s missing 14-year-old daughter, Diana Galvez Ortega. Flock camera footage allegedly showed the two traveling together in a car without license plates.
On Sept. 8, the sheriff’s office announced that the vehicle was located and was no longer being sought in connection with the Amber Alert, but the search for them remains active. KRON reports that detectives allege Galvez Perez is hiding Galvez Ortega to avoid being arrested.
According to KRON, Monterey County Sheriff Tina Nieto said Galvez Ortega is considered a murder suspect and a victim at the same time. She said, “Two things can be true at once. You can be a victim and also you could be a suspect. And our job is to follow the evidence and figure out what happened. We do not ignore one victim over another victim.”
Prosecutors say no charges have been filed against Galvez Ortega, KRON reports. According to the outlet, the District Attorney’s Office released a statement that reads, “No child should ever have to endure such horrific circumstances. Children who have experienced abuse can face extraordinary barriers to safety and may be unable to seek help on their own, particularly when they are under the control or influence of an abuser. Whether she is currently able to seek assistance or not, we want her to know that help is available.”
The investigation is ongoing.
