ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (TCD) — Deputies recently arrested a man on suspicion of killing his girlfriend and trying to cover it up as suicide.
On March 9, deputies with the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office Patrol Operations Bureau responded to an apartment at 2790 Ave. North after an individual called 911 and said 50-year-old Nafa Secic stabbed herself and died. Responding deputies found Secic dead in her bedroom with stab wounds to her chest, abdomen, and back.
The victim’s boyfriend, 53-year-old Rifet Redzic, reportedly told detectives he awoke to the victim grabbing a knife from the kitchen, and then she began stabbing herself in the bedroom. According to the sheriff’s office, Redzic said he tried but failed to stop Secic from harming herself.
However, further investigation revealed the victim’s wounds were not self-inflicted, and investigators believe Redzic stabbed Secic numerous times.
According to the sheriff’s office, Redzic “initially maintained the claim that Secic stabbed herself,” but then he “continued to provide detectives with inconsistent statements.”
Redzic eventually confessed to stabbing Secic in the back, but he insisted the stab wounds to her chest and abdomen were self-inflicted.
Officials arrested Redzic on a charge of first-degree murder. He was booked into the Pinellas County Jail on March 13, where he remains held.
