MELBOURNE, Fla. (TCD) — A 24-year-old man will spend the rest of his life behind bars for fatally shooting his 23-year-old ex-girlfriend last year because she wouldn’t return his calls.
On Dec. 6, the Florida State Attorney’s Office for the 18th Judicial Circuit announced that a judge sentenced Carlos Jones to life in prison. A jury convicted him in September of second-degree murder in connection with the 2022 death of Sha’Dayla Johnson.
According to the state attorney’s office, on Dec. 20, 2022, shortly before 8 a.m., Melbourne Police officers responded to a home at 2827 Colbert Circle to a report of a shooting. Officers discovered Johnson unresponsive in the carport suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.
Johnson was transported to a hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries.
Witnesses reportedly observed Jones, the victim’s ex-boyfriend, at the home at the time of the shooting. Jones and Johnson had previously lived together.
Jones eventually surrendered to police in Palm Bay at approximately 11 a.m. The state attorney’s office said he confessed to the shooting and claimed he and his ex-girlfriend had a dispute because Johnson wasn’t “responding to his phone calls or text messages.” WPEC-TV reports that Johnson was on her way to work when Jones confronted her.
Jones will serve his life sentence in the Florida Department of Corrections.
