Former Turnstile guitarist charged with attempted murder in death of bandmate’s dad

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. (TCN) — Brady Ebert, the former guitarist of the Grammy-winning band Turnstile, is facing a possible life sentence in prison after allegedly hitting his bandmate’s father with his car.

KTLA reports that the attempted second-degree murder charge against Ebert, 33, was upgraded to an attempted first-degree murder charge on April 30. According to Louder Sound, Ebert was previously facing up to 30 years in prison and could now be sentenced to life behind bars if convicted.

In a press release, Montgomery County authorities announced that officers responded to a home March 29 after receiving a report of a hit-and-run. Ebert had allegedly gotten into an argument with neighbor before hitting him with a 2001 Buick. The victim was treated at the hospital for serious injuries, and Ebert was taken into custody on March 31.

The victim was later identified as William Yates, 79, the father of Turnstile frontman Brendan Yates. Family members allege Ebert drove onto Yates’ property while shouting obscenities before hitting Yates with the car, according to Louder Sound. During their argument, Yates allegedly threw a rock at Ebert’s car. At his indictment on April 30, Ebert stated that he acted in self-defense and that video surveillance footage from home security cameras would prove it.

According to KTLA, Ebert, who co-founded Turnstile with Brendan Yates and three others in 2010, was kicked out in 2022. The band recently won two Grammys, including for Best Rock Album.

Following the incident, Turnstile shared a statement with Rolling Stone that said, “Turnstile cut ties with Brady Ebert in 2022 in response to a consistent pattern of harmful behavior affecting himself, the band, and the community. After exhausting every available resource to support his access to help and recovery, a boundary ultimately had to be set when healthy communication was no longer possible and he began threatening violence. In the years since, his baseless tirades have continued in public. We never addressed it. We chose to protect his privacy and the circumstances around his departure, even when he did nothing to be deserving of that protection. Over the past few months, his threats only escalated further. … We have no language left for Brady.”

Ebert has also been charged with attempted second-degree murder, first-degree assault, and two counts of second-degree assault, according to KTLA. Louder Sound reports Ebert is being held without bond and has his next court appearance scheduled for May 8.
