According to investigators, Cole abducted Smith on September 16 from his Phoenix home and took him to Tucson. He claimed that Smith attacked him when he stopped on the way to use the restroom.
Cole allegedly admitted to the officers that he had strangled his hostage after placing him in a submission hold and transported the body to his Tucson residence. Once there, he purchased tools to dissect Smith’s body, including cleaning equipment.
Reporters took note of a crime scene near Federal Correctional Institution-Tucson the day after Cole was apprehended on September 20; they later found that the area was related to the kidnapping and murder.
KOLD said that Cole was sentenced to more than 15 years in federal prison in 2003 on a drug charge and was facing aggravated assault and aggravated harassment charges from an incident earlier this year.
