SUFFOLK COUNTY, N.Y. (TCN) — A 35-year-old woman has been sentenced to 18 years behind bars for first-degree assault after she threw a stick of dynamite at her boyfriend, which caused him to lose his hand.
The Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office announced that on May 27, Keyonna Waddell was sentenced to 18 years in prison followed by five years of supervision after her release. Following a jury trial in April, Waddell was convicted of first-degree assault and first-degree criminal possession of a weapon.
On March 22, 2024, Waddell and her boyfriend, whose name has not been released, got into an argument. They both left the apartment. Later that night, the victim returned home and went to bed. He woke up to a hissing sound and saw what looked like a stick of dynamite. He tried to put it out and eventually picked it up to throw it out the window, but it exploded in his hand. The victim then ran outside and saw Waddell leaving the property.
The remainder of the victim’s hand was amputated, and Waddell was arrested the following day. Investigators learned she had previously threatened the victim with dynamite, according to the DA.
Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney said, “Domestic violence can escalate to deadly levels, and this case is a sobering reminder of that reality. … A dangerous individual has been held accountable and will face a lengthy prison sentence for this horrific act,” KCBD reports.
