He was a starter for the Fighting Irish at defensive tackle in 1973 and 1974, and his performances there earned him first-team All-American honors from the Walter Camp Foundation.

Career Background Details

Fanning was drafted in the first round of the 1975 NFL Draft (during the ninth selection) by the Los Angeles Rams. He was touted to be the successor to Merlin Olsen, who was entering his 14th season in 1975. He then took over at left tackle in 1979 as the starter after an injury to Cody Jones. Prior to the 1983 NFL season, he was traded to the Detroit Lions and spent one season with them. Following this, he was signed as a free agent by the Seattle Seahawks in 1984.

In 2009, Mike joined the University of Tulsa athletic department and worked there for 14 years. He started working with the group ticket sales, before being the special assistant for administration and operations, until his demise.
