Obituary | Elsie Rueb of Selby, South Dakota

Funeral services for Elsie Rueb, 92, of Selby will be 11 AM, Friday, January 5, 2024, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mobridge. Burial will be at the Selby Memorial Gardens under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. Visitation will be at 5 PM with a prayer service at 6 PM at the funeral home. Elsie passed away Sunday, December 31, 2023, at the Walworth County Care Center in Selby. 

Elsie Viola “Reuer” Rueb, daughter of Margaret “Lutz” Reuer and George Reuer was born on March 13, 1931 on the family farm 5 ½ miles southeast of Lowry. It was Friday the 13th which she said wasn’t to unlucky as she reached 92 years old. Elsie grew up on the family farm and attended Sunnyside School. Elsie went to Hoven High School and graduated in May of 1949. In the fall of 1949 she attended National School of Business in Rapid City.

Elsie’s first job was at the County Extension Office in 1950 and then started at Cam-Wal in 1952.

She met the man of her dreams Ervin “Shorty” Rueb at an Akaska dance. Shorty told her he got her wedding from a cracker jack box. They had a two year engagement as Shorty went to fight in the Korean War. They got  married on September 20, 1953 at Zion Lutheran Church in Lowry. To this union two children were born, Crystal on December 21, 1954 and Doug on November 6, 1957.

Elsie did numerous jobs. She did bookkeeping for the Akaska School Board and School, Harold Schilling’s Hardware, Akaska Equity and the Selby Sale Barn.  She went to work for the Selby School District where she retired as the business manager.

Elsie and Shorty lived in Akaska until January 1974 when they moved to Selby where they owned Shorty’s One Stop from 1974 to 1996. They were also part of the Weekend Loafers camping group and loved traveling to Arizona in the winter and all other parts of the country.

Elsie is survived by two children, Crystal and Doug, two grandchildren, Allison (Koby) Sams and Ty Boettcher, two great grandchildren, Kennedy and Owen Sams.

Elsie was preceded in death by her husband, Shorty Rueb, on March 19, 2004, her father, George Reuer, on September 9, 1944, mother, Margaret Reuer, on February 14, 1998, three brothers, Erwin (Elvera) Reuer, Rueben (Rosemarie) Reuer, Calvin (Rita) Reuer, and one sister, LaVina (Clifford) Perman.
