Shamea Morton Mwangi’s husband, Gerald Mwangi, made a rare appearance on The Real Housewives of Atlanta Season 17, Episode 3. As the mom of two teased in an exclusive interview with BravoTV.com, viewers can actually expect to see much more of him this year.

“He actually comes around a lot more,” a “proud” Shamea revealed. “He always shies away from the cameras. Even when it’s not Bravo cameras, he’s just like, ‘What am I supposed to say? What am I supposed to do? This is not me.’ But he really has always been supportive of whatever I want to do. It’s just not his thing. And I appreciate them respecting that.”

The RHOA ‘Wife added, “When you see him, you see him. When you don’t, he’s still there. But you see him a lot.”

Shamea Morton Mwangi reveals the secret of her successful marriage to Gerald Mwangi

Shamea and Gerald have been together for nearly 12 years and will celebrate their ninth wedding anniversary in July 2026. As for the secret to their successful marriage, she joked, “Happy wife, happy life!” before diving into how they really make their relationship work.

“I think it’s communication, for sure,” Shamea explained. “You have to be able to talk about the hard things. If there are wants, there’s expectations, and then there’s needs: what you expect me to do and be as a wife, and what I expect you to do and be as a husband. That’s stuff that you have to talk about.”

That doesn’t mean that those subjects are always “easy to talk about,” she said, nor do she and her husband always agree.

On RHOA, for example, Shamea admitted that Gerald was “not even impressed at all” as she worked to launch her new rum company, but she decided the venture was “worth the risk” and went “all in,” anyway.

“Sometimes you need a third person,” Shamea remarked in her interview. “You need a counselor or a mediator or a therapist to kind of weigh in on it. That’s helpful.”

Never going to sleep at night “with things on our heart” is another strategy that she said they employ in their marriage.

“We try not to go to bed upset with each other,” Shamea elaborated. “We try to talk about it, figure it out. And sometimes we walk away, like we agree to disagree. But we’re not gonna hold it against each other. Like we are still a team. We’re still on the same team. And this is still a relationship that we’re fighting for, not against.”

She continued, “We’re fighting to keep our love, to keep our happiness, to keep our home, the sanctity of our marriage. And it’s not always great. But when it’s great, it’s great. And when it’s not great, it’s still good. I always tell people marriage is like a happy job, the job that you really want. It requires work. You really have to clock in. But it’s the job that you enjoy.”

Describing herself and Gerald as both being “spiritual people” who center God in their lives, Shamea put a bow on the topic by saying, “That’s what we are for each other: good sex, good communication — and some hefty finances always help.”

Shamea Morton Mwangi shares an update on daughters Shya and Shiloh

Gerald isn’t the only family member Shamea was glad to share the spotlight with while filming Season 17. In RHOA‘s April 19 episode, viewers saw the couple drop off their first-grader, Shya, at school, but Shamea hinted that there’s even more screentime in her 7-year-old’s future.

“Shya is made for TV,” she joked. “Like, girl, move. You are not a Housewife yet.”

As for her “baby girl,” Shiloh, 3, who has experienced health challenges amid a choanal atresia diagnosis, Shamea shared, “She’s the sweetest. I’m enjoying being able to share her story with the world. Hopefully I help someone else with our story and being so open about it. Someone else that is probably on the same journey, or a similar journey, with a child that’s special needs.”

Shamea concluded, “I’m just showing there is light at the end of the tunnel. And you can get through it. It’ll be OK.”

Don’t miss a sneak peek at what’s ahead for Shamea on RHOA Season 17, including the continuation of her fertility journey.
