Growing up, Hilaree spent her weekend’s skiing in the Washington Cascades at Stevens Pass.

Similarly, she worked arduously to be an athlete while excelling at basketball, soccer, and track. She also deftly evaded conflict while doing so.

She could have followed her father’s wishes and played collegiate basketball, but instead, she moved to Chamonix, strapped on a harness, and terrified herself.

Nelson O’Neill chose in 2016 to prioritize staying close to home to be with her children, who were then aged 6 and 8. After running her first ultramarathon, she registered for Ironman triathlons, which she completed, scaling her first significant wall.

Furthermore, she was recognized as one of the 25 most daring women of the previous 25 years by Men’s Journal in 2017.

The first skiers to descend from Lhotse’s 27,940-foot summit, the fourth-highest mountain in the world, were TNF colleagues Hilaree Nelson and Jim Morrison in October 2018.

One of the most beautiful ski descents among the highest mountains in the world is the 7,000-foot vertical ski run down the Lhoste Couloir.
