Steven D. Bails Convicted In Murder Of Kayla Sedoskey

Steven D. Bails, a 45-year-old man from Frenchtown Township, was found guilty of first-degree homicide and conspiracy to commit homicide in the murder of Kayla Sedoskey, a 23-year-old Monroe woman.

The jury’s deliberation lasted for an hour and a half before reaching the verdict. The trial included testimony from co-defendants Narena Bails, Sierra Bemis, and Alexander Feko, as well as 20 witnesses and evidence from 60 exhibits.

Kayla Sedoskey’s body was discovered on March 2, 2023, in the abandoned Boysville Juvenile Detention Center in Frenchtown Township, covered in a tarp and shot three times. The Michigan State Police initiated a year-long investigation into the homicide, leading to the arrest of six suspects, including Steven Bails, after a stand-off with U.S. Marshals.

Steven Bails and his wife, Narena Bails, were arrested in North Carolina in April 2023 and extradited to Michigan. Both were charged with homicide – open murder and conspiracy to commit homicide. Following the guilty verdict, Steven Bails is scheduled to be sentenced on May 23.

Narena Bails previously pleaded guilty to second-degree homicide on February 23, and the charges of homicide – open murder and homicide – first-degree premeditated murder were dismissed. She is scheduled for sentencing on May 23 with a bond of $1 million. Sierra Bemis, another co-defendant, pleaded guilty to second-degree homicide on February 8, and two other charges were dismissed. Bemis is also scheduled for sentencing on May 23 with a bond of $500,000.

Brin Smith, 20, has been charged with homicide – open murder and homicide – first-degree premeditated murder, with a trial scheduled for April 22 and a bond set at $1 million. Kaylyn Ramsey, 33, was charged with homicide – open murder and homicide – first-degree murder, with a court appearance scheduled for May 13 and a bond of $1 million. Alexander Feko, 27, pleaded guilty to tampering with evidence and three counts of accessory to homicide after the fact, with a sentencing scheduled for May 23 and a bond of $275,000.

The case highlights the shocking circumstances of Sedoskey’s death, found tied up, wrapped in a tarp, and with duct tape over her mouth at the abandoned detention facility. The murder was meticulously planned and executed, involving multiple suspects who were arrested and charged in connection with the crime.
