Valley Producer Breaks the Fourth Wall to Help Jason Caperna

When a scary injury sidelined Jason Caperna during a friendly basketball game with the guys on The Valley, a producer broke the fourth wall to help him.

While shooting hoops with some of his castmates at a local park in Season 3, Episode 8, Jason noted that he had hurt his knee after attempting one specific maneuver, but he played on, nonetheless. Shortly afterward, Jason began to go in for a layup but stopped halfway into his shot, falling to the ground and gripping his knee. 

When the guys asked if he was OK, Jason answered, “No, I’m not. My knee’s f–ked. It popped out. Oh my God. … Can we get someone here fast? I retired from basketball for a frickin’ reason.”

As Jason remained in the prone position on the court, a producer stepped in and inquired, “Do you want us to call the ambulance right now? Or do you feel OK to be put in a car?” He replied, “Probably ambulance, maybe.”

Once the ambulance arrived and the paramedics were loading Jason into the vehicle, he remarked, “I hope I’m just a baby and I’m fine.”

Jason Caperna shared new details about his knee injury on The Valley After Show

It turned out that Jason was not fine, however, and had actually blown out his knee. On The Valley After Show, he shared more details on his injury that — take it from Tom Schwartz — were not for the squeamish.

“There was such a loud pop that I, like, heard it and felt it so loudly,” Jason recalled, alongside a wincing Schwartz. “And then when I was on the ground, I looked down [and] my kneecap was in the wrong place.  … I don’t know much about, like, knee injuries like that, so I’m thinking maybe it’s just dislocated.”

As several of the guys shared their reactions to and accounts of the incident, Jason further described his kneecap and shin being “disconnected.” He added, “So, like, if I would roll one way, the kneecap would roll that way too. So, I felt the kneecap moving. … That’s why I’m like, there’s something weird here. So I couldn’t roll over.”

Though Jason described himself as “athletic” and said that he played basketball in high school, as well as in recreational leagues both at Boston College and for several more years post-graduation, his wife, Janet Caperna, joked on the After Show that he was well past his prime at 42 years old.

“Jason knew he shouldn’t have been playing,” she said. “Jason stopped playing basketball like 12 years ago because his knees were hurting him. And before he left, I told him, I was like, ‘Do not show off.'”

During The Valley‘s May 20 episode, Jason seemed to be most concerned about his role as a father to his and Janet’s 2-year-old son, Cameron.

“To see my future of the next however many months where I’m going to be disabled is really scary,” he admitted in a confessional. “My son, like, he is at an age where he just wants to play, he just wants to run around. And I’m seeing the prospect of that vanishing for who knows how long, maybe forever.”

Earlier in the episode, Jason and Janet had also discussed being ready to welcome a second child into their family. Either way, Jason’s injury will have a major impact on their lives through the rest of the season.

As the couple’s Season 3 bios teased, “Hoping to expand their family, Janet and Jason start their fertility journey, but when Jason suffers a major injury, Janet is left having to take care of baby Cameron and Jason, all while trying to build her relationships within the friend group, all on her own.”
