Whoopi Goldberg has never been shy about the fact that she does not identify as a Democrat, despite having liberal and left-leaning voting habits. And on Tuesday’s (November 3) edition of The View, she went even further to claim that she was “kicked out” of the party decades ago.
Since it is election day for the 2026 midterms, she and the other cohosts had a full day of “Hot Topic” discussions related to the latest in election news, and when the subject of Haley Stevens’ last-minute defection from the party in the Michigan race, Goldberg said that the fact that Stevens was removed from the party wasn’t reason enough for her to endorse Abdul El-Sayed’s opponent, Mike Rogers.
“I’ve been kicked out of the Democratic party, too,” she explained. “I was kicked out 22 years ago. I mean, listen, it doesn’t stop me from doing what I need to do. All she needed to do, in my opinion, she could have not voted for him and then said, ‘Listen, this is me voting my heart. This is why I did this.’”

Goldberg previously revealed in the summer of 2025, after former White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre announced she was leaving the party, that she did not consider herself to be a member of the party.
“There is no name for what I am,” Goldberg said at the time. “There’s no name. Because there are some things that fit with what I want and some things that don’t. And I’m the crazy person who said, ‘Why don’t we have a Democratic president and a Republican vice president?’ I believe that the only way to get stuff done is to have both parties represented at the same time. And people keep telling me I’m crazy, but I don’t think I am. But both parties have issues, and for me, there is no loyalty in the Democratic party and there’s absolute pig-headed loyalty in the Republican party. And neither thing works for me.”
Goldberg has repeatedly said, though, that she mostly espouses Democratic ideals, while encouraging voters to “you take care of your business the way you need to” at the polls.
