Mere hours after messaging family that someone was holding her hostage, an Alabama woman was found shot to death on the side of a road.
Mahogany Jaquise Jackson, 20, was last heard from on Sunday morning. She messaged her mother and sister that she was being held hostage and she asked for police, according to the mother, Gail Maddox, in an AL.com report that day.
“She sent me a text message that said she was being held hostage and sent her location,’’ Maddox said during the missing person case. Jackson said not to call her, but to reach out to police.
Maddox said she initially missed the Facebook Messenger notification because she was on the phone while on the way to pick up her son, daughter-in-law, and granddaughter from the Atlanta, Georgia, airport, but Jackson’s sister called her.
Both family and the cops rushed to the location that Jackson gave — Serenity Apartments in the Powderly neighborhood of Birmingham. The resident of the apartment in question was a woman that Jackson knew, and this woman finally let them inside. They did not find Jackson, however, and this resident allegedly told cops that Jackson had left at 2 a.m.
Maddox did not buy it.
“I know that’s not true because she sent that message and her location at 7:46 a.m.,” she said of her daughter.
Maddox reportedly voiced fear of something terrible happening.
“I feel it in my stomach,” she said. “My daughter would never say call the police, but she was afraid and that’s why she asked us to.”
Officers made the tragic announcement on Monday. That morning, at 2:19 a.m., police responded to a call of a person dead on the side of the road at 17th Street SW and Laurel Avenue.
“When officers arrived on the scene, they observed the victim lying unresponsive on the side of the road, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound,” cops wrote in a statement obtained by Law&Crime. “Birmingham Fire and Rescue Services arrived on the scene and pronounced the victim deceased.”
As part of their preliminary investigation, they say that someone encountered the body on the side of the road and called 911.
