Referee Tierney detailed the incident in his match report, stating that he was surrounded by members of Nottingham Forest’s substitutes and backroom staff on the field of play after the final whistle. One of those who approached him was Steven Reid, who was not listed on the teamsheet. Tierney claimed that Reid used abusive and insulting language towards him, which was backed up by fellow officials Richard West and Scott Ledger, who heard Reid’s outburst.

Despite Reid’s denial of using abusive and/or insulting language towards Tierney after being sent off, the independent Regulatory Commission found him guilty of improper conduct and using abusive/and or insulting language towards Tierney.

The commission could have issued a fine of up to £250,000 against Forest, but only gave them £75,000, despite their poor track record in terms of respect towards officials.

The incident highlights the ongoing issues of respect and behavior in football, with the FA and all of football’s stakeholders demanding more respect towards officials. The case serves as a reminder of the consequences for players, coaches, and clubs that do not adhere to the standards of conduct expected in the sport.
