Akim Aliu signed his debut professional contract, a three-year deal with the Blackhawks, on August 25, 2008. He joined Rockford for two games after the 2007–08 season, five games after the 2008–09 season, and two at the beginning of the 2009–10 AHL season before becoming a full-time member.
He played 48 games and recorded 11 goals and six assists before being sent to the Toledo Walleye of the ECHL late in the season. His playing rights were transferred to the Atlanta Thrashers after the season.
In addition to playing on contract for the Peoria Rivermen and another spell in the ECHL with the Gwinnett Gladiators, Aliu spent the remainder of the 2010–11 campaign with the Atlanta Thrashers’ AHL club, the Chicago Wolves.
