Jeremy Diaz dies months after neighbor’s alleged bat attack

A 6-year-old boy in Texas has died two months after a 39-year-old neighbor allegedly broke into the victim’s family home, where he viciously beat the young boy with a baseball bat. Jeremy Diaz tragically died Tuesday morning after spending more than 60 days in a coma as a result of the attack, the boy’s father announced.

The neighbor, Daniel Logan, was arrested and charged with one count of aggravated assault with a weapon causing serious bodily injury and intentional injury to a child resulting in serious bodily injury, court records reviewed by Law&Crime show.

In a post to his son’s GoFundMe page, Arturo Diaz wrote that the family was planning to extubate Jeremy and were waiting for the sedatives to “run their course” on Monday evening when the boy “started to have a neural storm” that lasted almost six hours.

Early Tuesday morning, the father said he went to check on his son at the Dell Children’s Medical Center and saw “a pale face and eyes with no motion” shortly before the child’s heart stopped. Attempts to resuscitate Jeremy were not successful.

“He fought for over 60 days and was improving, but at the end, the odds seemed against him and he gave up the ghost,” the grieving father wrote. “The last night before we were plunged into this nightmare, Jeremy told me that he had brushed his teeth and was ready for reading and bed. He took me by the hand and led me to his room. When we were done reading, the last thing he said was, ‘Papa, watch me cover myself.’ Today I covered his face for the last time. I was there when he took his first breathe and saw him take his last — no parent should see their children buried before them.”

According to a news release from the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office, deputies at about 5 a.m. on the morning of Sept. 11, 2023, responded to a disturbance in progress at a home located in the 300 block of Rock Mill Loop in Georgetown, Texas. Upon arriving at the scene, first responders said they found two victims, one of whom was a 6-year-old boy later identified as Jeremy, and transported them to a hospital for treatment.

Detectives said they determined that Logan had “forced entry into the home armed with a baseball bat” and assaulted Jeremy and another member of his family.

Logan last month was found incompetent to stand trial on the aforementioned charges and is scheduled to appear in court again on Nov. 28 for a mental health status hearing before District Court Judge Donna King, per court records.

Arturo Diaz previously spoke to USA Today and Austin, Texas ABC affiliate KVUE about the horrific attack.

“One day he just snapped,” Diaz reportedly told USA Today. “He came in and before I could disarm him, he had already hurt my son.”

Arturo Diaz also described seeing his son in the aftermath.

“I saw my 6-year-old laying in a pool of blood,” He reportedly told KVUE in September. “He was hit in the back of his head, shattered the back of his skull into pieces.”

Authorities have not announced if they plan to pursue upgraded charges against Logan.
