According to police, a 911 caller claimed that the man was holding a long metal rod in the rear of a residence. He seemed to be attempting to break into the residence, according to them. Police reported that the male, who seemed to be in his 20s, appeared to be perhaps intoxicated. According to authorities, the caller “confronted the suspect, who challenged him by asking whether he wanted to die.”
When police arrived, they reported that the man was carrying a weapon and that bullets had been fired around 10:30 p.m. According to police, the suspect was shot at least once.
Nobody else was injured.
The incident happened in a gated community on Westmere Avenue, closeby to the intersection of Aviary Way and Grand Teton Drive.
Police said their officers immediately called for medical personnel and attempted life-saving measures. The man was transported by ambulance to UMC Trauma, where he was pronounced dead.
After properly notifying the man’s next of kin, the coroner’s office will reveal the man’s identity as well as the reason for and circumstances surrounding his death.
According to department regulations and protocol, the name of the officer who discharged his firearm will be made public after 48 hours.
