According to the Hartford Courant, Jones defaulted on the defamation trial because he repeatedly failed to provide the court with business records. Judge Barbara Bellis subsequently concluded that Jones’ claims that the mass shooting was a hoax were defamatory and led to ongoing harassment targeting the victims’ families.

Adam Lanza killed his mother in 2012 before opening fire on 20 children and 6 adults inside Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. Then Lanza turned the weapon on himself.

Over time, baseless allegations that the Sandy Hook massacre victims’ families faked their children’s deaths have been leveled against them by Jones and his allies. On his platform, Jones specifically claimed that the mass shooting in 2012 was a “false flag” operation carried out by “crisis actors.” The families of the victims have occasionally had to provide evidence of the deaths of their children.

On Wednesday, a default judgment was also given to an FBI agent in addition to the relatives of the eight shooting victims.
