Los Angeles, California – Nearly three years after the tragic death of Sandra Bullock‘s husband, Bryan Randall, the world‑renowned actor has spoken publicly for the first time about the loss of her longtime partner, bringing his incurable illness into focus.

The Miss Congeniality star first met Randall, a former model and photographer, in 2015 during a photo shoot. It didn’t take long before the two became a couple.
After many years together, Randall was faced with the shocking diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) – a severe neurodegenerative disease. In August 2023, he succumbed to the devastating illness.
In a new episode of the podcast SmartLess, Bullock described her husband’s diagnosis as “traumatic.”

After the diagnosis came layer upon layer of secrecy: Randall had asked the 62‑year‑old star not to make his illness public, which became a heavy burden for the whole family.
“I wasn’t allowed to speak about it. That was the request, and I tried. I honored it,” Bullock explained.
She emphasized that she understood her late husband’s decision, but during the Covid-19 pandemic, the Practical Magic actor admits she felt increasingly “isolated.”
The experience placed an enormous weight on Bullock. “I started grieving Bryan four years before he passed,” she said.
For roughly half of their time together, Randall was ill. “My person left a lot earlier than the body left,” Bullock explained, adding that she only truly understood this after his death.
The actor described the 57‑year‑old’s disease course as a constant roller coaster. As a result, she began thinking about the future early on: “You have to quietly plan.”

“It doesn’t scare me – not the illness itself. It doesn’t scare me. I can see and be around just about anything,” Bullock said.
“But I had two young kids that were navigating it, especially a little girl who saw [Randall] as a father figure.”
According to the Hollywood icon, her sister, Gesine Bullock‑Prado, was the only person she talked to about her husband’s ALS for quite some time.

“When the physical illness was then coupled with the mental health aspect of things, and it’s something that people don’t talk about… it was a trifecta that was pretty dark,” she confessed.
As a result, the actor opened up to her closest friends: Jennifer Aniston and Amanda Anka. With their support, Bullock finally managed to break out of the downward spiral.
